A Study of Home Environment of Students in Urban Area

ABSTRACT
The objective of the present study is to find out the home environment of school going girls and boys. In home, family relations are broadly of two types- the parent child relations and husband wife relations. Most problems in home relations have been identified to result from misunderstanding which is the layman’s term for lack of communication. Many a time parent forgets that children cannot be judged from their own standards of morality or decency or culture. Quite often parents try to compensate for their children to achieve what they could not. They tend to become unrealistic in their demand and this causes frustration on both sides and spoils the whole environment of the home. The sample for present study was drawn from the primary school, secondary school and higher secondary school located at Ahmadabad (Gujarat) city. The sample consisted of 150 students; out of which were 75 male and 75 female. The sample further divided in to the three groups.50 students (25 boys+25 girls) from primary school, 50 students (25 boys+25 girls) from secondary school, and 50 students (25 boys+25 girls) from higher secondary school. In this study Home Environment Scale developed by Dr. Meenu Agarawal (2003) was used to Measure home environment of students. This scale consisted of 60 items. Its test-retest reliability score is 0.82 and validity with home environment inventory is 0.71. The sample was standardized on 1200 boys and 950 girls from 10-19 years. Mann- Whitney“ U” test was applied to known the signification difference between the level of home environment of students. The result Show that there is no significant difference between the mean of scores home environment of primary school students- male and female, there is high significant difference between the mean of scores home environment of secondary school students- male and female, there is high significant difference between the mean of scores home environment of secondary school students- male and female and there is high significant difference between the mean of scores home environment of male and female.
