ABSTRACT

Stress and anxiety represent two of the most pervasive psychological challenges of contemporary life, affecting individuals across all age groups and cultural backgrounds. While pharmacological and cognitive-behavioural interventions remain the dominant treatment modalities, growing empirical and clinical interest has turned toward art-based practices, particularly learning to paint and sketch, as accessible, low-cost, and effective adjuncts to conventional mental health care. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the theoretical, neurobiological, and empirical literature examining how the structured acquisition of painting and sketching skills reduces stress, anxiety, and related psychological symptoms. Drawing on frameworks from art therapy, mindfulness science, positive psychology, and psych neuroendocrinology, the review synthesizes evidence from experimental studies, randomized controlled trials, and qualitative investigations. Findings consistently indicate that engaging with visual art-making activates the parasympathetic nervous system, lowers cortisol levels, induces flow states, promotes emotional regulation, and fosters a sense of self-efficacy and personal identity. Particular attention is given to the mechanisms by which the learning process itself, distinct from passive art appreciation, contributes uniquely to psychological wellbeing. Implications for clinical practice, educational settings, workplace wellness programs, and community mental health initiatives are discussed. Future research directions are identified, including the need for longitudinal designs, standardized outcome measures, and greater attention to cultural diversity in art-based therapeutic approaches.
