ABSTRACT
Background: Since 3 May 2023, Manipur has experienced prolonged ethnic conflict and widespread population displacement, exposing affected communities to traumatic events, loss of livelihoods, family disruption, and prolonged uncertainty. Internally displaced persons (IDPs) living in relief camps may therefore be particularly vulnerable to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This study aim to assess the prevalence of PTSD and its association with selected socio-demographic characteristics among IDPs residing in relief camps in the Imphal Valley of Manipur. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 546 internally displaced persons residing in relief camps in the Imphal Valley. Data on socio-demographic characteristics and PTSD status were collected using a structured questionnaire. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize participant characteristics, while Pearson’s chi-square test was used to examine associations between socio-demographic characteristics and PTSD status. Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. Results: Among the 546 participants, PTSD was present in 513 (94.0%), and absent in 33 (6.0%). Females constituted 54.9% of the sample, while males constituted 44.7%. Conclusion: PTSD was highly prevalent among the IDPs studied, highlighting a substantial mental health burden among conflict-displaced populations in Manipur. The findings support the need for systematic psychological screening, trauma-focused mental health services, and sustained psychosocial support within relief camps.
