A Study on Sleep Quality and Internet Addiction among School Going Adolescents in Meghalaya

ABSTRACT
Sleep is a primary aspect of adolescent development. It is a key indicator of physical and psychological health. It also critically influences the cognitive and psychosocial wellbeing. The aim is to study the sleep quality and internet addiction among school going adolescents in Meghalaya. The present study is cross-sectional and exploratory in design. Random sampling method was used for selection of schools. The subject was selected from schools in Meghalaya. A total of 312 respondents were included for the final analysis, socio-demographic datasheet, sleep quality questionnaire and internet addiction scale were administered. The study findings show that there is a correlation between internet addiction and sleep disturbance significant (p 0.05), sleep latency (p 0.01), sleep day dysfunction (p 0.01) and overall sleep quality (p 0.01). Regression analysis showed internet addiction contribute significantly to the prediction of sleep quality among school going adolescents. The study findings indicate the importance of understanding the significance of good quality of sleep for adolescents. There is a need for intervention and guidance to be given on good sleep quality and the impact of excessive use of the internet. The study could also pave the way for mental health professionals to plan an intervention strategy.
