ABSTRACT
Celebrity endorsement has been studied extensively, but little research compares its effectiveness to that of animal and hybrid endorsers, or examines which endorser type works best for which product. This paper addresses that gap by reviewing the literature on celebrity, animal, and hybrid endorsers and explaining the psychological mechanisms behind each — including attention, cultural meaning transfer, and anthropomorphism — along with the conditions under which each mechanism breaks down. Building on this review, the paper’s main contribution is a contingency framework showing that celebrities are most effective for luxury, beauty, and fitness products, animals for everyday and durable goods, and hybrid endorsers for food, pet, and children’s products. This framework offers researchers a more integrated view of endorser effectiveness and gives marketers practical guidance for choosing the right type of endorser for a given product.
