Metacognitive Strategies as Tools for Reducing Cognitive Load and Enhancing Learning Efficiency

ABSTRACT

Metacognition is the process of understanding and regulating your own thoughts. Metacognitive strategies can maximize learning by managing cognitive load and enhancing the learning experience. Educational psychology is the basis for understanding metacognition. Metacognitive strategies such as planning, monitoring and evaluating will help learners reduce the demands placed on their working memory, one of the three forms of cognitive load (cognitive Load Theory was conceived and developed by John Sweller) and they will assist learners in more effectively allocating cognitive resources across the three forms of cognitive load (intrinsic, extraneous and germane). The use of self-regulation strategies will allow learners to determine which strategies are ineffective for their own academic success and adjust their academic strategies to maximize the amount of cognitive resource allocated to high-quality learning tasks and to minimize cognitive load caused by using ineffective learning strategies. Additionally, the incorporation of metacognitive strategies results in both higher levels of understanding, critical thinking skills, and longer-term retention of knowledge when utilized effectively. A Qualitative and Analytical approach was utilized to combine existing methodology, theory, and research regarding metacognition and its relationship to learner performance and problem solving. These findings also demonstrate that individuals who utilize metacognitive strategies in their learning processes achieve higher academic success than those who do not use metacognitive strategies; therefore, it is critical that educators provide students with opportunities for developing metacognitive skills within their instructional design while also developing adaptive, learner-focused environments. Ultimately, the use of metacognitive strategies provides tools for alleviating cognitive load, while providing enhanced overall efficiency of learning. The implications related to the application of these strategies across multiple educational contexts are vast for educators, curriculum designers, and policymakers looking to enhance student learning in such a complex world of information.
