The Impact of Parent Involvement and Education Level on Secondary School Student’s Academic Achievement in District Sivasagar, Assam

ABSTRACT
Education of children is one of the key factors for the development of human civilization because education is believed to increase human capabilities to create productive human beings capable of advancing the nation. This study aimed at finding out the impact of parent’s involvement and education level on secondary school student’s academic achievement. Methods and Materials: Descriptive-correlational research design was adopted for conducting this study. The study was conducted at 12 government and private Secondary schools in Sivasagar district, Assam. The population of the study includes all the secondary school students from class 7th grade to 10th grade (13-18 age group) studying in the district of Sivasagar, Assam under Assam Higher Secondary Education Council. A total of 500 secondary school students, 250 male, 250 females were selected from 12 schools of Sivasagar district. In the present study stratified random sampling has been used to collect required data. Chouhan and Arora, The Parental Involvement Scale (2009) were used to measure parental involvement. The scale consists of 25 statements. Each statement has five options namely- Always, Often, Sometimes, Rarely, Never. Academic achievement of students was collected from final examination results with the permission of school authorities and students. Results: Study findings showed that the majority of the secondary school student’s parents were highly involved in their child’s academics. Findings also showed that the majority of the student’s academic achievement was above average (65.73). There is a significant positive relationship between parental involvement, education level, and secondary school student’s academic achievement. (<0.01). Conclusion: The finding of the study stated that parental involvement and education level has a direct impact on secondary school student’s academic achievement. Being the first teacher for every child’s parents plays a major role in a child’s academics and performance. Every parent should try to provide a positive environment for their children and give them support, guidance, motivation, time for their education.
