ABSTRACT

The present study aims to explore and compare the levels of self-esteem and anxiety among male and female students from rural and urban areas. The sample consisted of 100 students (50 rural students and 50 urban students with 25 females and 25 males in each group) using convenient sampling technique. The Self-Esteem Scale (SES) developed by Heatherton and Polivy (1991), and Anxiety, Depression and Stress Scale (ADSS-BSPSA) by Bhatnagar, Singh, Pandey, Sandhya and Amitabh (2011) has been used.  The results of the study, after going through ANOVA shows no significant difference between Rural and Urban students in terms of Self-esteem (F=3.682, p > 0.05), while a significant difference is observed between gender (F=5.720, p < 0.05), and significant interaction effect is found between area and gender on Self-esteem (F=4.526 p < 0.05). While for Anxiety no significant difference between Rural and Urban students is found (F=0.192, p  > 0.05), no significant difference is observed between gender (F=0.371 p >0.05), and no significant interaction effect is found between area and gender on Anxiety (F=0.890 p  > 0.05).
