ABSTRACT

How does trust shape the dynamics of romantic relationships, and what happens when it falters? Trust serves as a foundational pillar in intimate partnerships influencing emotional security, communication, commitment and overall relational satisfaction. This systematic review examines psychological, interpersonal and therapeutic dimensions of trust in romantic relationships, drawing upon research papers published between 2000 and 2025. By using PRISMA model 34 peer-reviewed studies were selected after comprehensive search of 426 records across five major databases – PsycINFO, PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, and Web of Science.  Findings revealed that trust is significantly influenced by attachment styles, emotional regulation, and past-relational experience. Problems with trust often begin due to trauma, betrayal by partner or poor communication.  These issues create emotional distance and reduce satisfaction in a relationship. Various forms of therapy, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), have proven effective in restoring trust.
