Pragmatic Language Skill Defecits Among Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder

ABSTRACT

Autism is a complex neurobehavioral condition that includes impairments in social interaction and developmental language and communication skill combined with rigid and repetitive behaviors. The ability of children with ASD to communicate and use language depends on their intellectual and social development. Some children with ASD may not be able to communicate using speech or language and some may have very limited speaking skills. Pragmatic communication in social situations (Knowing what to say, how to say it, and went to say it). There is a disproportionate difficulty with pragmatics and social communication compared to the structural aspects of language such as grammar and vocabulary. This study describes the pragmatic language skill deficits in children with autism spectrum disorder in Tiruchirappalli district of Tamilnadu, India. A Descriptive design was used for the purpose of this study. Sixteen Children with Autism comprising of eight boys and eight girls were selected through simple random sampling. As researcher analysed 16 children’s with autism. Researcher finded 48 percent of sample having pragmatic language skills deficit. Out of 48 Percent 9 percent are having  non verbal language deficits, 8 percent general conversation deficits, 8 percent are unable to  maintain topic, 8 percent social language skill deficits and other defecits of Pragmatic defecits in 13 Percent.
